Democracy Happy Hour TODAY @ 5 pm PT/8 pm ET via Zoom! Grab a drink and come hear about the latest democracy news, ongoing efforts to fix democracy, and actions you can take at our weekly Democracy Happy Hour, Wednesdays @ 5 pm PT/8 pm ET. This is an online virtual event via Zoom. Today's topic for May 21, 2025: SPECIAL PROGRAM: Citizens Awakening to Their Power: Needed Now More than Ever with Sam Daley-Harris After the election Tom Nichols wrote in The Atlantic, “….Americans must stay engaged and make their voices heard at every turn….” Liz Cheney tweeted, “….Citizens across this country…must now be the guardrails of democracy.” But most Americans still wonder how, and even if, they can make a difference between elections. What are the options? 1) Protesting? Vital, but usually not the long game, 2) Signing email form letters, which only 3% of Congressional staff says is highly effective? Just gestures, 3) Taking a 2-year nap until the next election? Sadly, the preferred route for many. But few know about #4, which can make a big difference: transformational advocacy which helps you change an issue and changes you in the process. Sam will discuss what people can do in the current political climate, such as connecting with organizations that work to deliver transformational advocacy including: 1) local chapters so folks aren't working alone, 2) training to increase skills and feel more empowered, and 3) encouraging volunteers to do things as advocates that they never thought they could do like meet with members of Congress or write letters to the editor and op-eds. |

It's Time to Renew Seattle's Democracy Voucher Program! |
|
If you are in the Seattle area on May 27th, join us for the Yes on Prop. 1 Campaign Kickoff for the Seattle Democracy Voucher Program Renewal! Join us as we launch the campaign to renew Seattle's successful Democracy Voucher Program! Since 2015, the DVP has changed local elections for the better—giving everyday people a bigger voice, making it possible for more diverse candidates to run, reducing the influence of big money in politics, and more. Now it's time to renew funding for the program—and we can do that by approving Proposition 1 in the August primary election. We're kicking off a summer of voter education to secure the future of this groundbreaking program. At a time when our democracy and communities are under threat, Proposition 1 can make Seattle a leader in ensuring that everyday people have the voice we deserve in our elections. Will you join us? We're planning a fun-filled evening of community and campaigning, with activities including a photobooth, banner-painting, and more, as well as plenty of ways to engage. We'll also hear from a powerful lineup of local leaders and members of our coalition. Details: • Date: Tuesday, May 27th • Time: 6-8pm • Location: Parkview/Seattle Unity at 200 8th Ave N Snacks and drinks will be provided. Some parking will be available, though we highly encourage attendees to use public transit. Our venue is ADA accessible. Please contact our Campaign Coordinator with any questions. | | | | | |
