Today's topic for October 30, 2024:
Extremism and Violence: Its Impact on Democracy

with Ryan Nakade, CURE-PNW

Fears of extremism and political violence have been on the rise, especially in regards to the upcoming election in November. In this presentation we'll discuss how political violence has asymmetric impact, as a small number of violent or extreme actors can exert disproportionate influence over the democratic process and the direction of society. Fortunately we all have a role to play in halting the normalization of violence by reaffirming norms of pro-democratic and non-violent paths to political change. We'll also discuss methods to reach out to individuals and communities who are at risk of committing violence, while also examining the systemic drivers of radicalization, polarization, and extremism.

Ryan Nakade is a mediator and facilitator with a passion for bridging political divides. He's currently the project coordinator for CURE-PNW, a federally funded project that uses a public health approach to preventing political violence in the Pacific Northwest.

The system used for electing our representatives is seldom questioned in the United States. Recently, in the face of voter apathy and increased expressions of antipathy towards government, some Americans have begun to consider that there may be a relationship between the method used to select their representatives and peoples’ numerous complaints about the government it produces.

This presentation will outline what multi-member districts are, where and how they are used, and how they could improve representation.
